04-May-1987:  Symbiosis! I had a rental car (a red Escort as I recall), a leaden right foot but no local knowledge and a local railfan (I seem to recall his name was Peter) had track knowledge but no car.  Together we were able to chase the "Flying Scotsman" from about Hellifield to the outskirts of Carlisle on this bank holiday weekend (though I don't know if he'd ever get into a car with an Aussie again!).  Here the train is north of Blea Moor over one of the superb stone arch viaducts that give character to this secondary mainline.
