20-May-1988: It had been a long day....... flying Singapore Airlines Melbourne - Singapore - Athens, thence on Turkish Airlines to Istanbul then another plane change and on to the capital, Ankara. Staggering into our hotel room, we threw open the shutters and this magnificent view of the mosque greeted us. We were in Turkey!

<![CDATA[Bridge over Tigris River, Hasankeyf, Turkey (Travel)]]> Bridge over Tigris River, Hasankeyf, Turkey

29-May-1988: The only crossing of the mighty Tigris River in central Turkey is at Hasankeyf. A new bridge spans the Tigris, but to one side the piers of the original bridge, built in 1116 AD, can be seen as silent sentinels in the fast flowing river. The decking was built of timber, enabling it to be burned if an enemy approached. I found it extraordinary that these piers had lasted 900 years - but then Turkey is full of wonderful historical (biblical even) artifacts that make you almost feel like you're travelling back through the pages of history books.

01-Nov-1985: The Heian Jingu is an imperial Shinto shrine. The entrance to the shrine is through the largest Torii Gate in Japan (depicted here). First constructed in 1895, many of the shrine's buildings were destroyed in a fire in the 70s and rebuilt in the late 70s.
